Paris climate pact set to enter force after European Union greenlight

Delivering the Parliament's ratification document to the United Nations, later this week, will fulfill the agreement's enactment criteria; the deal will take effect 30 days later, in time for the start of a November 7 climate change conference in Morocco.

"With the gathering momentum and willingness expressed by several other countries to ratify the agreement before the end of this year, it is expected that the Agreement will enter into force soon and give a thrust to the global actions to address climate change". "The political process for the European Union to ratify the Agreement is concluded", it said.

"The European Union has a long track record of leadership against climate change", noted Mr Ban Ki-moon before the vote.

Earlier in September 2016, the United States and China had formally ratified the Paris agreement, which was adopted by 195 parties to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change last December in Paris.

According to the provisions of the Paris Agreement, the treaty will come into force as and when 55 countries, or signatories contributing 55 per cent of the total global harmful emissions, ratify the Agreement.

Ratifications representing at least 55 parties and 55 percent of global emissions are needed for the agreement to enter into force.

His previous career low for minutes played was during the 2014-15 season in which he averaged 36.1 minutes per game. Also, Griffin said the team has made "an incredibly competitive and aggressive offer in re-signing" free agent J.R.

European Union environment ministers backed the fast-track ratification of the deal last Friday, despite the fact that only seven out of 28 European Union countries have actually ratified it since it was sealed in Paris in December.

The EU accounts for about 12 percent of global emissions, making it the third largest polluter behind the United States and China.

"Now that the Agreement is entering into force, it is imperative that countries aggressively move forward to implement their national emissions reduction plans to begin lowering emissions, while simultaneously work together to drive increased ambition for the next round of climate commitments in 2018".

"They said Europe is too complicated to agree quickly", EU Commissioner for Climate Action and Energy Miguel Arias CaƱete said in a statement Friday.

The world is "tantalizingly" close to a climate deal as India prepares to ratify the agreement at the end of the week, a senior United Nations official announced. The EU promises a significant "binding target of an at least 40 percent domestic reduction in greenhouse gas emissions by 2030 compared to 1990" and notes that the bloc is in a strong position because it has already taken steps that "reduced their emissions by around 19 percent on 1990 levels" since 2012, "while GDP has grown by more than 44 percent over the same period".

In the course of the parliamentary debate on Tuesday, some European Union members, who were against the ratification, raised concerns about citizens having to pay more for cars, heating, and electricity, due to possible outcomes of the climate agreement entering into force.
