In call with Putin, Trump denounced Obama-era nuclear arms treaty

Russian President Vladimir Putin asked Trump about extending the New START treaty

On Jan. 28, just over a week after taking office, President Donald Trump got on his first phone call with Russian President Vladimir Putin.

"I would not formulate any positions as of now".

A new report claims President Trump told Vladimir Putin that an Obama-era treaty with Russian Federation that caps the deployment of nuclear warheads was "a bad deal".

U.S. Senator Susan Collins (R-ME), along with Senators Cory Gardner (R-CO), Jim Inhofe (R-OK), Todd Young (R-IN), Rob Portman (R-OH), Mike Rounds (R-SD), Joni Ernst (R-IA), and Lindsey Graham (R-SC), sent a letter to President Trump urging his Administration to pursue a principled and tough-minded Russian Federation policy, highlighting Russia's aggressive behavior in Ukraine, Syria, and cyberspace. "We had a break in the dialogue on strategic security issues, so we need some kind of updated information on the [the parties'] stances against the backdrop of this break".

The treaty came up when Putin "raised the possibility of extending" it, two US officials and one former USA official with knowledge of the call told Reuters.

If New START is not mutually extended, neither America nor Russian Federation would be limited in their nuclear production, which could trigger a nuclear arms race.

"In this context the deployment of a missile defense system is needed", the expert said.

In the phone call, the Russian leader raised the possibility of reviving talks on a range of disputes and suggested extending New START, the sources said. "The START Treaty marked the limit of the disarmament in the former format". The Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty was concluded in 2010.
