Man arrested for 2016 strangling death of New York City jogger

The NYPD has arrested a 20-year-old Brooklyn man in the killing of jogger Karina Vetrano, after he confessed to the crime and was linked to it through DNA, police said Sunday.

Chanel Lewis, 20, of Brooklyn, was held without bail after his arraignment on murder charges in the August 2 slaying of 30-year-old Karina Vetrano, whose body was found amid the weeds in a marshy park not far from her Queens home.

Now police have revealed they have arrested and charged Chanel Lewis with the murder of Ms Vertrano.

"This is truly a very sad case in which a handsome and talented young woman senselessly lost her life", Queens District Attorney Richard Brown said in a Sunday statement. That night, Vetrano joined police on a search that tracked his daughter's cellphone to Spring Creek Park, where he found his daughter's body in a tall, weeded area.

Boyce said police do not believe Lewis knew Vetrano and it appeared to be a chance encounter.

Police say officials saw Lewis around his neighborhood on the Brooklyn/Queens line back in May, and thought he was suspicious.

In the end, it was a direct DNA match that led to an arrest.

"This woman put up a ferocious fight right to the end", Boyce said at a news conference a year ago.

He found his daughter's body about 15 feet off a path, the New York Daily News reported.

Cops caught a suspect Saturday in the murder of Karina Vetrano, the handsome jogger whose brutal strangulation last summer - in the high weeds of Spring Creek Park in Queens - had transfixed the city.

However, authorities circled back to a previous report from a Howard Beach resident who called police with reports of Lewis acting suspiciously near the area back in May. "We would stop at nothing to find the savage that did this to her". Lewis' DNA matched samples found at the scene.

Vetrano, 30, was found beaten, strangled, and sexually assaulted on August 2 in the neighborhood of Howard Beach.

"That's how we made the link", Boyce said. She had left the family home in Howard Beach at 5 p.m. on a jog.

A family friend told the New York Post that Phil Vetrano was "traumatized".

When asked what he would say to the suspect charged, Phil Vetrano said, "I can't".
