The Mitsubishi Eclipse Is Returning…As an SUV Named Eclipse Cross

Mitsubishi to build Eclipse Cross compact SUV

Whether the plug-in hybrid drivetrain of the Mitsubishi Outlander will expand to the Eclipse Cross remains to be seen. The Eclipse Cross will be part of a trio of new crossovers that the automaker plans to bring to markets worldwide, focusing on that hot segment instead of its more familiar coupes, sedans and light trucks.

Mitsubishi claims the first part of the name of its new Eclipse Cross SUV, set to debut at the Geneva Motor Show next month, stems from "a word used to describe an astronomical event".

In a short statement, Mitsubishi said: "Eclipse derives its name from the MMC's popular specialty coupe model sold in the US from 1989, while Cross is short for crossover". Details are fuzzy at the moment, but the Eclipse Cross has a more coupe-esque silhouette than the Outlander.
