Environment Canada says the freezing rain may last several hours resulting in hazardous driving conditions across southern Ontario for Tuesday's commute

A winter storm warning meanings heavy snow is expected or occurring and will make travel very risky. But with temperatures hovering around 36 degrees, the steady rain that pelted the metro area all day still could turn to snow tonight. The weather service issued a blizzard warning for some coastal areas. Winter storm watch extends from coastal ME down through southern New Hampshire, northern Maryland - including north of Baltimore and Washington, D.C. - and parts of eastern West Virginia.

Roads and highways along the Interstate 95 Northeast corridor are also expected to be treacherous, so travelers should allow themselves more time and drive more slowly to ensure they get to their destinations safe.

The snowstorm will move away from NY and arrive in eastern New England by 3:30 p.m. ET on Thursday, according to ABC News meteorologists.

The storm was expected to hit eastern Pennsylvania and northern New Jersey with rain early Thursday morning, before changing over to snow in time for the morning commute.

By early evening, the snow will start to taper off, but gusty northeast winds will lead to continued blowing and drifting snow in the evening and night. Philadelphia could get 4 to 6 inches of snow, New York City could see 6 to 10 inches and Boston could end up with 12 inches, according to ABC News meteorologists. Inland, the snow will fall heavily, but there will not be as much wind.

"A Winter Storm Watch has already been issued for areas north and west of Philadelphia, where over 6" may fall in spots. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 17.

"The heavy snow will create snow covered roads and produce scattered power outages", the forecast states. While the sunshine will be back Friday, highs will struggle to climb much above freezing.
