Golovkin Goes All Twelve Rounds With Jacobs

Loeffler GGG can fight in June and in September with Canelo

It felt like it was a matter of time that a big right would land and two of them did in quick succession in the fourth which sent Jacobs to the canvas.

Golovkin tried to follow up, but Jacobs' defense was solid. "I think this fight may go back and forth", he continued, "and Golovkin is an absolute monster but, in my opinion I think Jacobs will fight like a champion, especially coming off that huge Peter Quillin win". He entered the match with a 32-1 career record, including 29 knockouts. So even though he swept the last three rounds on two cards, and took two of the three on the third card, it was too little, too late for "The Miracle Man".

The judges dissented. Golovkin kept his multiple titles, prevailing on scores of 114-113 and 115-112 twice. Golovkin was tentative in the opening two rounds, but knocking down Jacobs in the fourth round got him back on track.

"I wasn't thinking that I needed the 12th round to win the fight", he said, per Rafael. Nicknamed "Miracle Man, " after overcoming bone cancer in 2011-12 to win 10 straight fights, he almost pulled off the huge upset. "I can't destroy him", Golovkin said afterward. He's rumored to return in June to face Billy Joe Saunders, who holds the only middleweight belt not owned by Golvokin, in a fight that could take place in Golovkin's native Kazakhstan.

Things started off slowly for Golovkin, who seemed to be feeling his way through the fight in the first three rounds.

"I believe both sides want this fight and we are getting closer to it, " Loeffler said. Jacobs had lost just once before the fight and yet was not expected to last more than a few rounds, the latest name on Golovkin's list of crushed fighters.

Gennady Golovkin unified the middleweight titles, but the victory over Danny Jacobs was in doubt until his hand was raised at the end.

A rematch would be the big seller, although the WBC may now order Srikaset to defend against Cuadras as Gonzalez licks his wounds as well as healing from them after suffering a first loss in 47 fights.

But angry Jacobs insisted: "I think I won this fight and so do the crowd here".

Here's what I know about this fight: it should denounce the theory that boxing is boring and dead. Did Jacobs, at the very least, lay down a blueprint on how to beat GGG?

Jacobs did well when he fought at a distance and used his jab, while Golovkin did better when he used his jab to set up right hands.

Golovkin's opponent this St. Patrick's Day weekend now enjoys a similar knock-out percentage (88%) as the heavily favored reigning champion. "When I got up, I thought, 'This is all he has?"
