Maine Unemployment Falls Again in February

Georgia gained nearly 12,500 jobs last month and 114,000 jobs over the last year

L.A. County's economy chugged along at almost full employment in February as the unemployment rate fell to 4.8 percent and employers added 33,000 jobs to their payrolls, state figures released Friday show.

Tom Austin, from the Illinois Department of Employment Security, says while the number of people without jobs declined 0.4%, the number of employed people also declined, by 1,900 compared to the same period a year ago.

The Cincinnati Metropoli-tan Statistical Area, which includes Hamilton, Butler, Warren, Clermont and Brown counties, saw an increase from 4.1 percent in December to 5.0 percent in January.

Nine states had notable jobless rate decreases from a year earlier, and 41 states and the District had no significant change. This happened mostly because people who had previously given up actively looking for work returned to the hunt for jobs.

The most recent jobless rate was released Friday by the Maine Department of Labor.

From February 2016 to February 2017, the state has added 57,700 jobs.

Unemployment rates were significantly lower in February in 10 states, higher in one state, and stable in 39 states and the District of Columbia, the bureau reported.

The state's labor force rose for the second consecutive month, to more than 2.3 million people. The trade, transportation and utilities sector lost 1,900 jobs, with retail cutbacks being the biggest factor, the DOL said. In December, the recorded labor force was 126,352 with 5,141 unemployed, data shows.

Employment losses occurred in Other Services (-100), Construction (-200), Professional & Business Services (-200), Information (-300), and Financial Activities (-400).

The current rate of 5.3 percent is the same as it was in February of past year. The drop in unemployment was captured by a gain in employment in February. In January, 44,235 new job openings in Atlanta were posted on Employ Georgia.

The state has added 57,500 over the last 12 months.
