'Fast and the Furious' on road to record global debut

Share

Based on early estimations, "The Fate of the Furious" is expected to set a new record for ticket sales, surpassing the previous benchmark of $529 million set by "Star Wars: The Force Awakens", according to Reuters. Either way, it is assured of scoring the top worldwide launch of all time, surpassing fellow Universal title Jurassic World ($316.7 million). This excluded China as the film released three weeks after its worldwide release.

"There is no market that hasn't had a strong reception", said Duncan Clark, Universal's president of global distribution.

The latest "Fate of the Furious" cost $250 million and change to produce, that's a big difference from the "Furious 7" $190 million, and it also a big increase from the first film's $38 million budget. After debuting this weekend, the film raked in $532.5 million across the world.

Added Universal domestic distribution president Nick Carpou: "Considering this is the second-highest opening domestically out of eight films speaks to the fact that people continue to be interested in the storyline". Despite the rising costs, the film remains on pace to top $1 billion worldwide, making more sequels a certainty.

Fast & Furious 8 also stars Dwayne Johnson, Jason Statham, Michelle Rodriguez, Tyrese Gibson, Chris "Ludacris" Bridges, Scott Eastwood, Nathalie Emmanuel, Kurt Russell, and Charlize Theron. Domestically, "Fate" made $98.8 million over the weekend.

"There was an emotional outpouring of support for that movie that was the definition of lightening in a bottle", says box-office analyst Paul Dergarabedian of comSocre.

Taking the No. 2 spot this week is "Boss Baby", bringing in an estimated $15.5 million.

Fans flocked to movie theaters over the Easter weekend and the box office was overflowing with ticket sales, but majority went to fast cars. While Hollywood has been dominated more and more by superhero movies, "The Fast and The Furious" has been able to carve out a niche in the action genre with a diverse cast that has appealed to a global audience.

Beauty and the Beast continued to draw viewers to North American theaters this weekend, earning US$13.6 million (RM59.90 million) in its fifth week. Going in Style rounded out the top five with $6.3 million.

Latest developments have confirmed that Fast and Furious 9 is already being planned for 2019 and a 10th instalment is set for a 2021 release.
