Senate interrogates Babachir Thursday

Senate summons suspended SGF Babachir over corruption allegations

The suspended Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Babachir David Lawal, was today quizzed by the three-man panel headed by Vice President Yemi Osinbajo.

The other two members of the presidential committee are the National Security Adviser, Babagana Monguno; and the Attorney-General of the Federation, Abubakar Malami.

Meanwhile, the Senate Committee had invited has the suspended SGF appear before it today.

A source at the villa said that the panel grilled him extensively on what the money was approved for and asked him to provide evidence of approval, where the cash was taken from and why the nature of the so-called "covert operation by the NIA" was not disclosed to the Buhari administration nearly two years after coming into office.

Chairman, ad hoc committee on mounting humanitarian crisis in the North-East, Senator Shehu Sani, confirmed receipt of a letter on the issue, in an interview with newsmen on Wednesday.

It could be recalled that the Committee's interim report indicted the Lawal.

"The Committee has granted your request conveyed in your letter dated 22nd March, 2017, and re-scheduled the meeting".

The Senate in December a year ago indicted Lawal in a unanimous resolution and requested President Buhari to sack him. "Yemi Osinbajo, SAN, to formerly request the submission of relevant documentation including the report of your Committee's deliberations on the same subject for appropriate consideration by the Presidential Committee". This is the third time that the SGF would be invited by the committee.

"By this letter, I am directed to formally invite you to appear before the committee on Thursday, April 27, 2017", the letter read.

He added the suspended SGF's absence at the investigative hearing is a deliberate choice because the panel has done enough to give him fair hearing in the matter.
