715 pounds lighter, Egyptian woman leaves India

Eman Ahmed

Eman Ahmed, an Egyptian declared the world's fattest woman, was flown to Abu Dhabi on Wednesday evening to undergo treatment for severe obesity. She had arrived in India on a modified Airbus plane in the month of February. The city traffic police arranged for a "green corridor" that enabled the ambulance bearing Ms. Ahmed to make the trip from Charni Road to the worldwide airport's Gate No. 5 in just 18 minutes, a journey that normally takes an hour.

"We have arranged for a hydraulic stretcher from Italy for Eman's journey and she will have doctors, paramedics and nurses with her during the journey", Sanet Meyer, director of medevac at VPS Burjeel, told AFP ahead of the trip.

"It was an emotional moment for all of us". "We're three sisters. The youngest is married and busy with her family and kids".

When Ahmed's story first made global news, Mumbai-based surgeon Dr. Muffazal Lakdawala set up a fundraiser to fly the patient to India. When contacted, Dr Muffazal Lakdawala, who treated Eman at Saifee hospital, said that the hospital followed "normal protocols".

The state government has also asked the officials to prepare a note that will be issued to all the hospitals.

Eman will spend the first 24 to 48 hours in the intensive care unit of Burjeel Hospital, before she is shifted to a customised premium suite.
