The aircraft was 60 km north of the Tezpur base when it lost contact with the station.

An Indian Air Force Su-30 MKI fighter jet has gone missing in Tezpur in India's eastern state of Assam.

The Su-30MKI forms the front line fighter fleet of Indian Air Force, who have ordered a total f 272 aircraft.

Sensation has been created in the handsome city of Tezpur after a Sukhoi 30 MKI aircraft which took off from here on Tuesday went missing mysteriously. Massive search operations are under way to locate the missing jet and IAF and army choppers were also pressed into service.

In March this year, a Sukhoi crashed in Rajasthan's Barmer.

The Air Force station is located 172 km from the Indo-China border.

May 19, 2015: A Sukhoi fighter crashed at Laokhowa in Nagaon district of Assam with both the pilot and co-pilot ejecting safely.

This is the second time that a Sukhoi-30 of the Tezpur base has met with trouble.

The IAF has contracted 272 Su-30 MKI fighter planes out of which almost 240 have been delivered.

"C-130 aircraft with electro-optical payload, Advanced Light Helicopters (ALH) and Chetak helicopters of the IAF have been tasked for this mission".
