Browns admit they might not keep Caleb Brantley

The Cleveland Browns made Caleb Brantley, the former Florida defensive tackle accused of simple battery this month, the first pick of the National Football League draft's sixth round Saturday.

Brantley was arrested and charged according to court records with a misdemeanor count of simple battery on April 21, 2017 following an incident with a woman on April 13 in which he is accused of hitting her with a closed fist, knocking her unconscious and dislodging a tooth.

Browns general manager Sashi Brown said the allegations are "concerning", and the team has not committed to keeping Brantley, per Aditi Kinkhabwala of NFL Network.

During his final season with the Gators, Brantley started 11 games and played in all 13, totaling 31 tackles and leading the team with 9.5 tackles for lost yardage, including 2.5 quarterback sacks. From our standpoint, we communicated to Caleb how serious a matter this is to us and that he can not repeat this behavior as he moves forward and more importantly than that, we communicated to Caleb that this is something that we are still investigating and looking into.

Brantley (6-2, 314) was an All-SEC Second Team pick previous year after he had 31 tackles and led the team with 9.5 tackles for loss and 2.5 sacks. I think that is very concerning for us and continues to be a concern. And more importantly than that, we communicated to Caleb this is still something we're investigating and looking into.

Now, the Bears are left with just one pick on Day 2 of the NFL Draft, and still have multiple needs that must be addressed. I haven't given out mine yet, but I'd probably give them a B or B+. "I just feel like it will help us build the roster".

Although he's been drafted, it's not a guarantee that Brantley remains a Brown for long.

One league source told me of #Browns Caleb Brantley: "A coach at school told every team he talked to 'stay away even if undrafted"'.

That all changed when reports surfaced that Brantley allegedly punched a woman outside of a bar and grill in Florida earlier this month. When firing on all cylinders, he is a menace to block with his initial quickness and active hands to win gaps, keep himself clean and make stops in the backfield.

The bottom line is, Brantley is a talented and strong defender who could help the Browns turn around their miserable run defense.
