Chicago police issue bulletin on gangs, high-powered weapons

Man Charged in Shooting of 2 Chicago Police Officers

Police said 10 people were shot in Chicago, and two of them died, after suspected gang members opened fire on a group attending a memorial for another man killed earlier in the day.

The officers were investigating a gang-related shooting that occurred earlier in the evening about 6:30 p.m. near 18th and Halsted streets in the Pilsen neighborhood, about 3 1/2 miles northeast of where the officers were shot, police said.

"Given the type of shootings and the incident last week (in which two offers suffered gunshot wounds about two miles away) we have put out an officer safety bulletin", said Guglielmi.

Before Tuesday, the last time a Chicago police officer was shot was November 27 in the West Garfield Park neighborhood. A 15-year-old boy was wounded in the left leg while riding in a black SUV, and those riding in the vehicle later called officers, Deenihan said, adding that the boy was hospitalized and their vehicle was processed by officers.

Six other victims, all from 23 to 26 years old, were taken to Stroger Hospital and listed in good condition.

"The gangs seem to have developed a fascination for these weapons that can do the most amount of carnage in the least amount of time, and we are working very hard to try and identify not only who's in possession of these weapons but also where they're getting them from", Lopez said. There are serial numbers on these military-style guns. It was then that a stolen Town and County minivan driven by Gomez pulled up beside the officers' van on the driver's side and the gunman in the front passenger seat opened fire from a few feet away, prosecutors said.

One was shot in the arm and hip; the other was hit in the back.

A Brighton Park shooting that left two dead and eight wounded is the latest episode in a gang feud that started past year and has involved assault weapons, an area alderman says. "We are flooding the area".

Gang members in the area have used assault rifles since a year ago, Lopez said.

"While our city has experienced profound challenges over the previous year, and some want to put a large share of the burden on the backs of these great police officers by implying that they've been backing down and pulling back, I have to tell you this, there's no more unsafe job than you could ask of these officers than to chase bad guys with guns", Johnson said.

In February, the Tribune reported that gangs in Back of the Yards and Brighton Park were increasingly using rifles.
