An Iowa sheriff's deputy died from his injuries Monday after being shot by an inmate who escaped from county jail, the Omaha World-Herald reported.

Morgan, 59, was taken to the Nebraska Medical Center in Omaha for treatment.

Correa-Carmenaty is being held at the Douglas County Jail in Omaha.

No graveside service will be held.

Authorities are still working to determine how Correa-Carmenaty obtained the gun and whether he had been able to free himself from his shackles during the ride back from court.

Correa-Carmenaty has been charged in Douglas County with kidnapping, use of a firearm to commit a felony, possession of a firearm by a prohibited person and operating a vehicle to avoid arrest. The Omaha judge set his bail at $10 million, but Douglas County Attorney Don Kleine said after the hearing that the public defender's office informed him that Correa-Carmenaty would agree to be extradited to Iowa during a hearing on Thursday.

If Correa-Carmenaty does not waive extradition, then the Nebraska and Iowa governors would sign documents ordering him back to Iowa, which can take up to 60 days, Kleine said.

Two deputies were transporting Correa-Carmenaty back to the Pottawattamie County Jail in Council Bluffs, Iowa, on Monday after he was sentenced to 45 years in prison for voluntary manslaughter and attempted murder in a separate case.

Kleine's office just got the paperwork from Iowa late Wednesday morning and they are now adding a charge of Fugitive from Justice.
