North Korea claims its new long-range missile can carry heavy nuke

Asked about the possibility of the United States having carried out cyberattacks to thwart Pyongyang's past missile launches, Han gave a negative answer.

At present, the longest-range missiles in North Korea's arsenal, such as the one just tested, are intermediate-range ballistic missiles (IRBM) capable of striking the USA base at Guam.

Japanese officials say the missile flew for about 30 minutes, traveling about 800 kilometers (500 miles) and reaching an altitude of 2,000 kilometers (1,240 miles). Pyongyang's actions are also seen as a threat by its neighbors, Japan and South Korea, and their allies, such as the United States.

North Korea said on Monday it was a test of the abilities of a "newly developed ballistic rocket".

A closed-door emergency Council session was set for Tuesday.

Kim Jong-Un was on hand and "hugged" his rocket scientists after what North Korean media hailed as the successful test of a "medium long-range" ballistic missile that is capable of carrying a heavy nuclear warhead.

U.N. Secretary-General Antonio Guterres is condemning the latest North Korean ballistic missile test as a violation of Security Council resolutions and a threat to peace and security in the region.

According to the South China Morning Post, analysts said that the UN Security Council would likely discuss the new sanctions, with China possibly playing a role in their formation.

There are doubts whether the North can miniaturize a nuclear weapon sufficiently to fit it onto a missile nose cone, and no proof it has mastered the re-entry technology needed to ensure it survives returning into Earth's atmosphere.

China has strongly opposed THAAD, saying it can spy into its territory, and South Korean companies have been hit in China by a nationalist backlash over the deployment.

Australia's prime minister has called on China to use its leverage over North Korea to end the regime's missile testing.

The Security Council first imposed sanctions on North Korea in 2006 and has strengthened the measures in response to its five nuclear tests and two long-range rocket launches.

Trump has advocated for a diplomatic solution to the uptick in North Korean aggravations, but he said last month that he would not rule out a major conflict with North Korea. The last set of sanctions, imposed in March, capped China's imports of North Korean coal, a key cash earner for North Korea.

What's worrying to the United States, among other countries, is that if this missile were fired at a different trajectory, it could have reached the US Andersen Air Force Base in Guam, according to aerospace engineer John Schilling's 38 North blog, which is published by the US Korea Institute at Johns Hopkins University. "It underscores not only the importance of the US-Japan alliance, but also US-Japan-South Korea trilateral co-operation".
