Apple teases 'seriously badass' iMac Pro and other new Macs at WWDC

Apart from updating it notebook lineup, Apple earlier today at WWDC 2017 also announced a plethora of updates to its iMac lineup.

Designed for high-end graphics editing, virtual reality content creation and real-time 3D rendering in particular, the iMac Pro certainly looks impressive, but with prices starting at $4,999, it's going to be beyond the financial reach of the majority of home users. Apple also introduced its workstation-grade iMac Pro. For the first time ever, Apple offers a 4K iMac that starts at $1,499.

Apple also claims to have integrated solid-state storage (SSD) that's twice as fast, though only benchmarks will prove that promise.

The 21.5-inch model can be configured up to 32GB of RAM, while the 27-inch can get up to 64 GB of RAM.

The refresh iMac displays are 43 percent brighter than previous ones, with 500 nits and 10-bit dithering and the capability to reproduce 1 billion colours.

The new iMac Pro. The new iMac models from Apple will come with newer faster processors, support for Thunderbolt 3, faster storage options, discrete graphics, and brighter displays. Notably, the new iMac Pro is scheduled to ship in December this year with a starting price tag of $4,999 (US). The new MacBook models are just 13.1mm thick, therefore Apple said these are the "thinnest and lightest notebook" from the company.

This likely means that these Core i5 and i7 chips are actually Core i5-Y and i7-Y CPUs that launched with the Kaby Lake generation, meant to succeed the previous Intel Core m parts while maintaining much of the same power profile as before. With an all-flash architecture and all-new thermal design, the iMac Pro delivers up to 80% more cooling capacity in the same thin and seamless iMac design. This new range of iMacs include an iMac 21.5-inch standard variant, a 21.5-inch iMac with Retina 4K display, and a 27-inch iMac with 5K Retina display.

'It is incredibly satisfying to see the capabilities of Radeon Pro 500 series in elegant form factors and enabling fantastic content creation, gaming and VR experiences, ' crowed Raja Koduri, senior vice president and chief architect of the Radeon Technologies Group at AMD.

Graphics are driven by the new AMD Radeon Vega GPU with up to 16 GB of on-package HBM2 memory and performance of up to 11 teraflops (single precision). The new MacBook Air models will also get a bump in processor speed.

The Radeon Pro 500 series starts with the Radeon Pro 555, which has 12 compute units for a total of 768 stream processors, 81GB/s of memory bandwidth, and offers a 1.3 T/FLOPS peak performance.
