Fallout from Iran attacks spells trouble to come in wider Middle East

This week's attacks at Parliament and the mausoleum of the Islamic Republic's founder Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini have exposed shortcomings within the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, which was supposed to be protecting these potent symbols of Iran's revolution. His ministry said two had been detained in the western Iranian province of Kermanshah.

In a message read at the funeral, Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei said that the attacks will add to what he said was the hatred Iranians harbor towards the United States and Saudi Arabia - a major Sunni power and regional archrival of Shi'ite-ruled Iran.

Iranian authorities arrested 41 people Friday in connection with the twin terror attacks this week, the semiofficial Fars news agency reported, as evidence mounted that Iranian Kurds affiliated with the Islamic State extremist group had carried out the assaults.

It described the suspects as "agents of Daesh", an Arabic acronym for the Islamic State group, and said they included "operational teams".

According to official accounts, more than 17,000 Iranians have been killed in acts of terrors over the past three decades. Saudi Arabia has said it was not involved.
