Rule gives Oregonians non-gender option on driver's license

OR is now the first state to allow a third gender option on driver's licenses.

An X will appear instead of M or F in or driver records and on the driver license, instruction permit or ID card.

Thursday's move isn't the only one in OR granting rights to transgender people with regard to identification documents. The new policy represents a unanimous move Thursday by the Oregon Transportation Commission, reports Reuters, and goes into effect July 1.

Shupe, an OR resident, is an Army veteran who was designated male at birth (DMAB) but began to transition in 2013.

Gender identity has become a major flashpoint across the USA in places like North Carolina, which passed a bill forcing students to use toilets according to the sex listed on their birth certificates.

"Gender identity refers to a person's internal sense of being male, female, or something else", according to the American Psychological Association.

Since Shupe's petition was granted, judges in two OR counties have granted similar petitions to transgender people.

"My gender identity has never been male, but I feel like I have to own up to my male biology", Shupe told the Oregonian at the time.

While new to the United States, non-binary gender markers are not new-other cultures and other countries have recognized non-binary genders for many years, including Canada, India, Bangladesh, Australia, New Zealand and Nepal. "I'm a mixture of both", Shupe said.

Gender non-binary residents will soon be able to select "X" for non-specified gender when they apply for their identification cards.

In California, the state Senate by a 26-12 vote passed a bill on May 31 to add a third gender option on state IDs, sending it to the state Assembly.

Last year, intersex activist and Navy veteran Dana Zzyym sued the federal government for the right to choose a third gender on their passport.
