Feds investigate explosion at USAF recruiting office

The U.S. Air Force recruiting office in Bixby before it was damaged in an apparent explosion

Local and federal authorities are investigating an explosion at a US Air Force recruiting office in Bixby, Oklahoma.

The blast in Bixby, OK happened Monday night. The front doors are visibly damaged and no injuries have been reported.

Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives spokeswoman Meredith Davis said agents are treating the matter as a domestic act of terror "out of an abundance of caution", because of the proximity to the recruiting center, but that it could also have been a prank or an accident.

One of the office's two front doors was off its hinges Tuesday morning and lying in the parking lot. If the incident is determined to be a case of domestic terrorism, the FBI will take over the investigation. No one was injured Monday night when the blast rattled the office in a strip mall near Tulsa, blowing the doors off and causing heavy damage, the Federal Bureau of Investigation says.

The U.S. Attorney's Office has filed charges against Roden that include malicious damage to federal property by use of explosives, destruction of federal property, use of explosive to commit a federal felony and destruction of federal property. The witness said it appeared there was a "pipe bomb" inside the backpack.

FBI Special Agent Jessi Rice said initial information received about the Air Force recruiting center bombing indicates a pipe bomb was used, CNN reports.

Federal investigators from several different departments responded to the explosion.

"It's a little bit comforting that they didn't want to kill anybody".

Investigators have reportedly indicated such a designation can not occur until a suspect or a motive becomes known. "The reason they did it at night probably shows that they wanted to hide".

At this point, it is not clear what Benjamin Roden meant by the post.
