Kentavious Caldwell-Pope reaches deal with Lakers

General manager Rob Pelinka has said the Lakers are firmly committed to preserving enough cap space in 2018 to sign two free agents to max contracts. Caldwell-Pope was the eighth pick in the 2013 NBA Draft, drafted by the Detroit Pistons.

Caldwell-Pope entered the offseason as a restricted free agent, but the Pistons decided they would not match an offer sheet after acquiring shooting guard Avery Bradley from the Celtics. Caldwell-Pope, 24, instantly becomes one of the top-10 highest-paid shooting guards in the National Basketball Association and can cash in again next summer when the salary cap is expected to be even higher. The Lakers had committed themselves to offering only one-year deals this year, but to compensate they were offering the remainder or most of their salary-cap space for those deals. He was considered the best remaining unrestricted free agent on the market after the Pistons renounced his contract last week. It'd also be interesting to see how Caldwell-Pope and Clarkson would wind up on the depth chart at shooting guard, but it's hard to envision Clarkson being pushed back to the second-team at this point. Though the talent left on the market is obviously not what it was when free agency started on July 1st, some teams are still looking to add some veteran leadership or some young talent with upside.

Rondo signed a two-year deal worth $28 million with Chicago last summer, but the Bulls released him on June 30 of this year after averaging under eight points and under seven assists per game.

The Lakers also met with Rajon Rondo Tuesday. Even still, the expectations for what role Rondo would play with the Lakers is an interesting topic.
