Marines, 1 Navy corpsman killed in Mississippi plane crash

The Marines, who use KC-130s for aerial refueling, did not immediately provide any additional information, including the plane's scheduled route. The plane flew out of Cherry Point, NC.

The U.S. Marine Corps announced the tragedy on Twitter: "A USMC KC-130 mishap occurred the evening of July 10".

The KC-130 transport aircraft crashed late on Monday in rural MS about 135km north of the state capital city of Jackson.

The fire chief of nearby Greenwood, Marcus Bank told to Green Commonwealth that the aircraft was scattered in a radius of 5 miles.

"The identities of the service members whose lives were lost in this tragic accident are being withheld to allow time for their loved ones to be notified", the Marine Corps said in a statement early Tuesday. Although the names of the dead have not yet been released, messages of condolences from officials indicate that, among the 16 bodies recovered, a unit of marines were killed in the MS crash.

The transport plane was moving personnel and equipment from North Carolina to a western base to train before deploying.

On Tuesday morning President Trump offered his condolences via a tweet. It crashed on the Sunflower-Leflore county line in central MS, he said.

The KC-130 Hercules aircraft disappeared from air traffic control radar over MS after taking off from Cherry Point, North Carolina.

Though the Marine Corps has not released any details, the aircraft may have suffered a "structural failure" at 20,000, Alan Hammons, an official with Mississippi's Greenwood Airport, told local CBS affiliate WNCN. The Clarion Ledger reported that the plane departed from Naval Support Activity Mid-South Base in Millington, Tenn.

Banks said the jet fuel in the field caused an intense fire in the area, forcing firefighters to resort to unmanned devices to control the flames.

Large plumes of smoke were visible for miles across the region, with the fire continuing to burn for more than four hours after the crash.

Andy Jones, a farmer, was working on his family's catfish farm just before 4 p.m. when he heard a boom, he told the Associated Press late Monday. In his own words, he said, "You looked up and you saw the plane twirling around,"."It was spinning down".
