Bill Gates gives away Microsoft shares worth $4.6 billion to charity

Bill Gates has a long history of giving up his Microsoft shares.

While the recipient of the riches wasn't named in the filing, it's safe to say the shares went to the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation.

In the meantime, this is noteworthy: With the stock gift, Gates' personal Microsoft holdings have dipped below 2 percent for the first time, to about 1.3 percent, by Bloomberg's calculations. Ballmer has been Microsoft's largest individual shareholder since 2014 or so.

Spokesmen for Microsoft and Gates didn't immediately respond to requests for comment.

As per a Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation's most recent financial statement, after the most recent donation, Gates' overall charitable donations now account for approximately $50 billion.

Bill Gates is now the world's richest man, although last month he was briefly knocked off the top spot by Amazon's founder and CEO Jeff Bezos for a couple of hours after a brief surge in Amazon's share price.

Gates remains the richest person on earth after the donation with a fortune the Bloomberg Billionaires Index valued at US$86 billion as of 10:40am yesterday in NY.

Gates' estimated net worth is $89.9 billion, as of July 2017.
