West Nile virus found in mosquito sample in Sycamore

Collin County Public Health confirmed Wednesday its second human case of West Nile virus in Plano for 2017.

According to the ODH, a 44-year-old Clermont County man contracted the virus.

So far this year, 29 OH counties reported West Nile virus activity in mosquitoes.

The latest results, show 11 pool samples testing positive for the virus with one human case in Allen Parish.

A few people will experience a more severe form of West Nile virus, called encephalitis (swelling of the brain), which may lead to a sudden and severe headache, high fever, stiff neck, and disorientation.

Most people (about four in five) infected with the West Nile Virus will not develop any symptoms.

Be aware of mosquitos during active times between dusk and dawn. The illness is transmitted to people by infected mosquitoes.

DRAIN - Help reduce the number of mosquitoes around and outside your home by emptying standing water from flowerpots, gutters, buckets, pool covers, pet water dishes, discarded tires, and birdbaths on a regular basis. WNV is especially risky to older people because it can cause brain inflammation and many other serious illnesses such as convulsions or paralysis.

Personal protection is recommended during outdoor activities by wearing shoes, socks, long trousers, and a long-sleeved shirt when outside for a long period of time. However, if you have flu-like symptoms and have been bitten by a mosquito in the last 15 days, it is important to get tested.

There were eight reported (confirmed or probable) cases of humans contracting the virus.

Install or fix screens on windows and doors to keep mosquitoes out of your home.

Use EPA registered insect repellent and follow the label directions.

Eliminate standing water in your yard, where mosquitoes can breed.
