California affordable housing bills clear Assembly

California May Require Tax Return Release for Presidential Candidates

Lawmakers reached a deal on the proposal after resistance from law enforcement officials and Gov. It was the latest effort by Democratic lawmakers in California to create barriers for President Donald Trump's campaign pledge to step up deportation efforts.

"We're living in fear today", said Assemblywoman Cristina Garcia, D-Downey, saying she had seen the fear "in my own family" over the past nine months of the Trump administration.

The California Values Act at first would have prohibited state and local law enforcement agencies from using any resources to hold, question or share information about people with federal immigration agents, unless they had violent or serious criminal convictions.

A compromise hammered out earlier this week between Brown and California Senate President Pro Tem Kevin de León carved out exceptions to the new restrictions.

The bill faced some opposition, including from the California State Sheriffs' Association.

Police and sheriff's officials, including jail officers, will still be able to work with federal immigration authorities if a person has been convicted of one of some 800 crimes, mostly felonies and misdemeanors that can be charged as felonies.

The California Police Chiefs Association went neutral on the measure after Brown's demands were reflected in the last round of amendments.

The bills are nearly identical, both would ban smoking at parks and beaches within the states, but there are a couple differences that make A.B.

Also passed on Thursday was SB 3, which will put a $4 billion affordable housing bond on the ballot next year, and SB 2, which adds a $75 fee on real estate transaction documents not related to house sales and which garnered the closest vote in the assembly.

In arguing against the measure, Republicans in the Assembly invoked the 2015 shooting of Kate Steinle by an undocumented immigrant in San Francisco, arguing that sanctuary protections make communities less safe. In the final hours of the just-completed legislative session, lawmakers passed a bill that would require presidential candidates in California to disclose their tax returns – or not be allowed on the ballot.

Democrats argued that the bill would heighten public safety by building trust between undocumented immigrants and police, encouraging crime victims to come forward.
