Charles Manson Clan Murderer Back On The Verge Of Walking Free, Again

Leslie Van Houten was Manson's youngest killer

Leslie Van Houten, the youngest of Charles Manson's murderous followers, was granted parole by a state board Wednesday, though California's governor can still block her release as he has done before.

Manson, also serving a life sentence, directed Van Houten and his other mostly young, female followers - known as the Manson Family - to murder seven people in August 1969. That doesn't mean she's out, but it's a big step toward that.

It was the second straight year that Van Houten, 68, was deemed suitable for parole, although California Governor Jerry Brown overturned last year's decision, saying at the time she "poses an unreasonable danger to society if released from prison".

Van Houten has candidly described her experience with the "Manson Family".

She's been up for parole 21 times, and on Wednesday it was once again granted by the California Parole Board.

However, regardless of that, the families of the Manson Family victims have been strongly opposed to her release. The state will now conduct a 120-day review of the parole panel's decision, after which Brown will have 30 days to "uphold, reverse or modify the decision".

Van Houten killed for infamous murderer Charles Manson during a series of killings that terrorised LA during the summer of 1969.

Leslie Van Houten, shown in 2002, has repeatedly been denied parole.

Van Houten was not involved in the Tate murders.

Van Houten is serving a life sentence for stabbing to death Leno and Rosemary LaBianca in their Los Angeles home on August 10, 1969.

When the panel announced its decision, Van Houten smiled. "I don't find parts in any of this that makes me feel the slightest bit good about myself". Starting in 1979, Van Houten has gone before the parole board regularly.

However, there have been arguments and petitions from both the Tate and LaBianca families, over the years, against granting parole to her or any other Manson follower who was responsible for the killings.

Since her incarceration more than 40 years ago, she has been a model prisoner. "I was one of them that could not leave", said share, TIME reported.
