Armed police were called and the ground was eventually evacuated, with the match being marked as a draw.

There were no reports of injuries.

Middlesex Cricket tweeted that a "crossbow bolt landed on the square".

Surrey captain Gareth Batty was relieved no one was injured by the "deadly" crossbow bolt that landed on The Oval field and led to the County Championship clash with Middlesex being abandoned.

The players were then told by umpires to immediately leave the field, with many running to the changing rooms.

A spokesman for Surrey said: "We were about to bowl the next ball and the arrow appeared two pitches to the side of the pitch we're playing on at the moment".

Cricket fans at the Oval ground have been urged to move inside after what one player described as a "metal tipped arrow" was sacked on to the pitch.
