Flu shots at the ready

It's the start of flu season and while cases are still low public health officials say it's the perfect time to get your flu vaccine. It's free and most people should be vaccinated every year according to the Centers for Disease

The flu shot will be offered for $25, which is to cover the cost of vaccine administration, however, no one will be turned away for the inability to pay this fee.

The flu season is an annually recurring time characterized by relative outbreaks of influenza, commonly referred to as the flu.

"While there have been reports nationally of influenza H3N2 strains causing illness that are derived from the vaccine strain, this is just one of multiple influenza viruses seen so far this season", Murray said.

No doubt, that made some pregnant woman a little nervous, but the Centers for Disease Control says more research needs to be done and it is sticking with the recommendation that pregnant women get a flu shot.

In February, we reported that flu numbers were on the rise last season with more than 400 cases in the area according to the Brazos Valley Health Department. "Now that flu season in New Mexico has started, I want to remind New Mexicans about the importance of getting their annual flu shot", said department secretary Lynn Gallagher in a recent statement. "Getting a flu shot is quick, easy, and not only protects you, but also those around you". "It is a choice, but we strongly encourage them to get immunized". Germs spread this way. It's recommended that you wash often with soap and water.

Flu symptoms generally develop over the course of a few hours, consisting of a high temperature, sore muscles, dry cough, headache, and sore throat. If soap and water are not available, use an alcohol-based hand rub.

Avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth. In British Columbia, health-care workers must get the vaccine or wear a face mask during flu season.
