Indonesia fireworks factory disaster kills at least 47 people

Deadly blast at Indonesia's fireworks factory

The blaze took hold at around 09:00 local time (02:00 GMT), at an industrial complex in Tangerang, west of the capital Jakarta.

The blaze has been brought under control, but the exact number of casualties is still being confirmed, the BBC reported.

The Tangerang police chief, Harry Kurniawan, said the police were investigating whether the factory had been properly licensed to manufacture fireworks.

Most of the bodies were found in a production room of the factory which is operated by PT Panca Buana, the firefighter said.

"Those who died are completely unrecognisable, totally burnt", Ms Oni Sahroni told Metro TV.

A police report said the fire spread after an explosion and that the factory's roof had collapsed. Nearby cars were burned out, and television footage showed thick black smoke pouring from the site.

Quoting a local official, MetroTV said that while the factory had a permit, its closeness to a residential neighbourhood was against regulations.

"My friends and I and some police officers knocked down a wall so people could escape, then the workers came out", he told AFP.

"I don't know how it happened, I was working outside of the factory and there were some explosions, four cars exploded and nearly all motorbikes also exploded", Ade, who suffered burns to his arms and legs, told AFP.
