Entering Gunderson's room, Trump said, "Hey, this guy looks tough to me, ' the president said as he shook Gunderson's hand".

The president also plans to meet with first responders later in the day.

Trump arrived at University Medical Center Wednesday morning.

Presidential spokeswoman Sarah Huckabee Sanders told reporters Thursday that "we're certainly open to having that conversation".

Trump said after the visit that he'd met "some of the most unbelievable people" and invited them to visit the White House if they're ever in Washington. "We met patients that were absolutely terribly wounded".

As a businessman, Trump was supportive of President Barack Obama's calls to tighten gun control laws after Sandy Hook, but embraced the pro-gun community and its advocates during the 2016 presidential campaign.

As he departed the White House for Puerto Rico, Trump called the Las Vegas gunman "demented" and a "very, very sick individual". "I felt like he couldn't do anything to me".

Police found a total of 42 guns in the hotel room and house of 64-year-old Stephen Paddock, who rained down a barrage of bullets from the 32nd floor of the Mandalay Bay Hotel towards an open-air concert Sunday night. "In return, thousands upon thousands of people showed the world just how thoughtful, caring and kind this world can be", he wrote. Trump spoke with officers before sharing remarks to the press.

Officials say 12 of Paddock's rifles were outfitted with "bump stocks"-a legal but controversial add-on that essentially converts a semi-automatic weapon into a fully automatic one".
