"Nawaz Sharif has chose to appear before the court in National Accountability Bureau (NAB) references in order to expose the targeted trial", Punjab Law Minister Rana Sanaullah said and added justice is being "compromised" in the case.

The Prime Minister said the next general elections will be held after June next year and expressed the confidence that the people will again give mandate to the PML (N).

As per the bill, it allows politicians disqualified from holding public office to head a political party.

The case against the former prime minister has become the center of much domestic media attention in Pakistan.

The 67-year-old former PM Sharif was disqualified by the Supreme Court of Pakistan in its landmark Panamagate verdict, announced on July 28 this year.

Sharif's papers for party president in the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) were submitted by PML-N leader Dr Tariq Fazal Chaudhry, while no other candidate from the party contested the election.

Addressing a gathering of party members at the Convention Centre here, Sharif said his supporters kept reelecting him to power despite his ousters from the office.

Parliament amended a law on Monday to enable Sharif to re-take the PML-N leadership.

Pakistan daily, Dawn, reported that on Monday the ruling PML-N has cleared the way for Sharif to be re-elected as the party president.

The controversial bill, moved by Minister for Law Zahid Hamid, was termed a "person-specific bill" by all the opposition parties.

The Sharifs are facing the trial following orders by the country's Supreme Court after an investigation into documents leaked from a Panama law firm indicated that Sharif and some of his family members had undisclosed assets overseas.
