White House Chief of Staff John Kelly said Thursday that his job is not to "control" President Donald Trump, attempting to undercut a common media talking point. "I don't believe - and I just talked to the president - I don't believe that I'm being fired today. And I'm not so frustrated in this job that I'm thinking of leaving", Kelly said during a surprise appearance at the White House press briefing.

"My only frustration, with all due respect to everyone in the room, is when I come to work in the morning and read about things I allegedly said, or things that Mr. Trump allegedly said, or people who are going to be fired or whatever and It's just not true", Kelly continued. Kelly brought Nielsen to the White House when Trump named him chief of staff in late July, and Trump quickly tapped her to be Kelly's deputy.

"It's amusing, I read in the paper-you all know, you write it-that I have been a failure at controlling the president or a failure at controlling his tweeting and all that", Kelly said.

And while the president has not said anything critical of Kelly, and in fact, has had nothing but praise for the retired Marine Corps general, reports have circulated that tensions between the two have been brewing.

"People should be concerned about a state that has developed a pretty good ICBM capability", Kelly said, addressing the threat to Guam as well as the US mainland.
