Iran adds missile to annual anti-US pageant


Thousands of Iranian demonstrators have taken to Taleghani Avenue, the street facing the former US embassy in Tehran, to mark their National Day of Fight Against Global Arrogance. A ballistic missile was put on display as part of the celebration.

"The United States must convince Iran that its security would be enhanced through regional arms control".

Ali Shamkhani, secretary of the country's Supreme National Security Council, addressed the crowd on Saturday, saying Iran will make any sanctions imposed by the USA "ineffective", even as Washington targets Iran's economic, nuclear and defensive power.

The former USA embassy in Tehran is now a cultural centre but stands as a symbol of a United States defeat for many Iranians.

"Such foolish words reveal that the Americans are not only an enemy to the leadership and government of Iran, but they are hostile to the very existence of a tireless nation that has for decades stood against them", Khamenei told a group of students Thursday, according to Iran's semi-official Mehr News Agency.
