POLICE found nine dismembered corpses, including two severed heads, at an apartment near Tokyo.

He said investigators found the bodies while searching for a 23-year-old woman who had disappeared.

A police official said a toolbox and saw found in Shiraishi's apartment may have been used to dismember the bodies.

A bloodcurdling discovery was made in the apartment in Zama, a city in Kanagawa Prefecture, during an investigation into the disappearance of a young woman who went missing earlier in October.

According to Jiji Press (wire service in japan), police found the two heads inside a cool box at the entrance of the apartment before being shocked about the rest of the bodies. Shiraishi allegedly told the police that he cut up the bodies in the bath, disposing of some body parts in the garbage.

Police will conduct DNA tests to conclusively identify the victims, the website reported.

Police conducted the search after security camera footage showed Shiraishi walking with the woman, who has been missing from her Hachioji home since earlier this month, near JR Hachioji Station and near the Odakyu Line's Sobudaimae Station near his home on October 23. He added: "It was something I never smelled before".
