NTPC said in a statement, according to NDTV, "An unfortunate accident in the boiler of 500MW under trial unit of NTPC - Unchahar occurred this afternoon".

"It's believed that accumulation of ash inside pipe and furnace of the boiler exploded due to pressure at the power plant", a senior official at Raebareli told Xinhua.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi said he was "deeply pained" by the accident at a power plant in Uttar Pradesh which has claimed 18 lives today, and added that the situation was being closely monitored.

The injured have been admitted to the district hospital.

Ambulances were dispatched immediately after the incident.
