Apple admits to slowing iPhones batteries as they age

Share

Apple issued a statement Thursday saying the company has used software updates to limit older model iPhones' performance. It discovered that the iPhone 6's score for iOS 10.2.0 appears "unimodal" (that is, it doesn't change) in performance, but when it studied the iPhone 6 running iOS 10.2.1, the performance peaked around the average score and several other peaks around some of the lower scores.

You have already had the impression that your iPhone was getting slower and slower?

People anxious about performance could replace batteries, which Apple does for free for iPhones covered by warranty or for $79 if that is not the case. Poole explained that users expect their phones to perform the same regardless of how old the battery is, but his tests indicated that wasn't the case. While many iPhone users have experienced perceived slowdowns due to iOS updates over the years, it appears that there's now proof Apple is throttling processor speeds when a battery capacity deteriorates over time.

Yesterday, we reported on a new development in the long simmering story about older iPhones beginning to feel sluggish after installing a new version of iOS.

You can buy a new iPhone 6 battery for as little as $US20, if you're willing to do surgery on your phone.

Apple has responded to the allegations on this subject on the site techno The Verge: "Our goal is to offer the best experience to our customers, both at the level of the performance and lifetime of their device". Apple says the practice is an attempt to protect those phones whose aging lithium-ion batteries can't keep up with the power demands of fast processers.

"Last year we released a feature for iPhone 6, iPhone 6s and iPhone SE to smooth out the instantaneous peaks only when needed to prevent the device from unexpectedly shutting down during these conditions", Apple said in an emailed statement to Reuters.

When the iPhone 7 was released a year ago, Business Insider reported on a survey of buyers that listed the reasons why they upgraded. That, on top of choices like new, backwards-incompatible charging ports and the removal of headphone jacks, makes people wary of planned obsolescence and being pushed to continually upgrade, and Apple's battery management measures aren't helping things.

The original Reddit threat notes the performance of an iPhone 6S.

Not everyone was happy with Apple's explanation, or the fact that the company called slowing down its products a feature. While it's possible to do your own battery replacement, it's a delicate and complicated surgery at the risk of doing seriously expensive harm to the device.
