Nation's top rated defensive end selects Penn State

Micah Parsons committed to Penn State on Wednesday, the first day of the early signing period.

Parsons is the third five-star recruit in the class for Penn State, joining New Jersey wide receiver Justin Shorter and Virginia running back Ricky Slade.

That's because the Buckeyes had to stop recruiting the No. 4 prospect in the country after he went on College GameDay and took a picture with Eddie George and Kirk Herbstreit, who both attended Ohio State. He named his dog, Brutus, the name of Ohio State's mascot - but this week it became clear that Ohio State stopped pursuing him because of a self-reported recruiting violation.

It appears Parsons' recruitment came down to the wire.

According to the report, an Ohio State staffer arranged for Parsons and other recruits to get access to ESPN's "College GameDay" set in the morning - an impermissible benefit.

The five-star defensive end attended the Ohio State-Oklahoma game on September 9 and met with the ESPN College GameDay crew while at the game.

"I think overall we did a pretty good job of [filling needs]", Franklin said.

Penn State is looking to replace highly-productive middle linebacker Jason Cabinda, so there is an opening at the position. They have the No. 1 recruiting class in the country and have a number of top recruits set to decide today. It also doesn't mean the Parsons violation was his problem, because it wasn't.

Parsons, a 6-foot-3, 235-pound defensive end from Harrisburg, Pa., picked the Nittany Lions over Georgia, Oklahoma and others.

He'll play defense for the Lions, either at defensive end or linebacker, a spot where the Lions are looking thin for 2018.
