Lok Sabha MP Baijayant Panda

Bhubaneswar: BJD president and CM Naveen Patnaik suspended Kendrapara MP Baijayant Panda from the primary membership of the party today on charges of anti-party activities.

Mr. Panda, who is the vice-president of IMFA, India's largest, fully integrated producer of ferro alloys, was suspended from the party with immediate effect by Chief Minster and BJD president Naveen Patnaik. IMFA is into mining, ferro alloys and power in Orissa and is owned by Panda's family.

Panda was elected to Lok Sabha in 2009 and 2014 from Kendrapara Lok Sabha constituency.

Panda's claim that he was a founder member of the BJD was totally baseless, and he had also openly campaigned for nominees of opposition parties during the panchayat elections previous year, added Patro. Apprehending serious conflict of interest, which would have compromised the interests of the state and the country, the party leadership refused to nominate him for the chairmanship of the standing committee, said the BJD release.

Panda also denied the allegations levelled against him as false and baseless. The party said that in 2014, Panda drew an "annual salary and allowance of Rs. This step reflects helplessness of CM & BJD Supremo Naveen Patnaik". "However, if he is nominated, he stated that he would be able to lobby and get it", Patro said. He also alleged conspiracy against him while expressing grief. He made the statement in reference to Patnaik's Private Secretary IAS officer V Kartikeyan Pandian.
