Floodwaters continue to rise in Paris

The Seine has turned into a powerful muddy torrent that has submerged parks and footpaths alongside its channel that runs through the French capital while river boats are no longer able to pass under the city's bridges

Paris authorities have closed several tunnels, parks, and the bottom floor of the Louvre Museum as precautionary measures.

Exceptionally heavy rains have caused power outages and forced about 400 evacuations from homes elsewhere on the Seine after it and other French rivers burst their banks.

"Because of climate change, we can expect floods in the Seine basin to be at least as frequent as they are right now", Florence Habets, a senior researcher at the France's national center for scientific research, told the newspaper. The circulation of the RER C train is completely interrupted in the stretch that runs alonside the Seine, a measure that authorities made a decision to extend until January 31.

Levels are expected to stay just below the exceptional 6.1 metre floods seen in 2016.
