Kashmir 4 policemen killed in Sopore IED blast amid shutdown to mark the anniversary of 1993 massacre

Sopore: Marking the return of IED attacks in Kashmir after three years, a powerful improvised explosive device (IED) blast killed four policemen in Sopore town amid a shutdown on the 25th anniversary of the Sopore massacre.

In a statement issued to news agency GNS, Jaish-e-Mohammad spokesperson claimed, "The Shaheed Afzal Guru squad carried out the attack".

Security forces have sealed off the area and massive hunt has been launched to nab the terrorists responsible for the incident.

There was heavy deployment of police and paramilitary forces in Sopore at the time of the incident to prevent any protests in view of the shutdown called by separatists on Saturday, reported The Indian Express.

Inspector General of Police (Kashmir range) Munir Khan said the IED had been planted in a shop and triggered off when police personnel on duty came closer to it.

Jammu and Kashmir police took to Twitter to confirm the blast and number of policemen killed in the blast. They claimed that many innocents were targetted.

Khan led police officers and jawans in paying floral tributes to the martyrs, a police spokesman said here.

The outfit in a media communiqué claimed that they have attacked the forces party in Sopore.

He said constable Ghulam Nabi has aged parents, pregnant wife, four-year-old daughter Faheeqa Nabi, two brothers and two unmarried sisters.
