As per the new research, those who consume one cigarette daily can develop a habit of chain smokers, and it can happen with more than two-thirds of people who use one cigarette in a day.

Data was compiled from eight studies from the UK, USA, Australia and New Zealand to gather their results.

The researchers found that more than half of the respondents (60%) had tried a cigarette and 69% of these people went on to smoking daily for some time.

They added that it showed the remarkable hold that cigarettes can establish after a single experience - and said the findings should be used to warn teenagers against experimenting with tobacco.

Together, the surveys included more than 216,000 respondents, with between 50% and 82% saying that, after trying a cigarette, they had gone on to smoke on a daily basis - at least temporarily. However, as Hajek pointed out, the situation might just be temporary, meaning that there's a chance you might "outgrow" daily smoking.

The conversion rates (from one cigarette to daily smoking habit) varied quite substantially depending on the survey, the lowest being 50 percent (a United States survey) and the highest being 82 percent (a United Kingdom survey).

To everyone's surprise, the company is running full-page advertisements in several United Kingdom newspapers, stating that it aims to stop selling cigarettes in Britain sometime in the future, notes CBSNews. But, he noted, the influence of e-cigarettes should also be explored, since the decline in smoking rates in England has accelerated since the devices came onto the market.

In 2016, British male smokers smoked an average of 12 cigarettes a day while female smokers each smoked an average of 11 cigarettes each day.

In 2016, 15.5% of the adults from the United Kingdom smoked, down from 19.9% in 2010, according to the office for National Statistics.
