Six Switch games also finished in the top 20 on the December software charts.

Nintendo executives have another reason to celebrate this morning, as NPD Group has just delivered hardware sales rankings for the month of December.

Nintendo has released Switch sales figures for the month of December ahead of tonight's NPD report.

Perhaps more impressive (or, at least more surprising) than the Switch sales, was the continued success of the humble 3DS.

The December 2017 figures also showed a 27% increase in 3DS sales year-over-year, resulting in the Nintendo 3DS family of systems selling 21 million units life-to-date in the United States alone. Switch has also received a much stronger third party support and has plenty of first party games slated to release this year with the recent mini Nintendo Direct confirming release window for some of the Spring 2018 games.

According to Nintendo, the Switch has sold over 4.8 million units since its launch back in March 2017, which previously qualified it as the fastest-selling home console in the history of the US.

Over the holiday season, shoppers purchased 1.5M Nintendo Switch systems during the five-week reporting period of December. Total figures for Switch now sit at more than 4.8 million; not too shabby considering it only launched 10 months ago. Super Mario Odyssey and Mario Kart 8 Deluxe were #3 and #4, The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild at #9, Pokémon Ultra Sun/Ultra Moon at #13/#14 and Splatoon 2 at #16.
