Power outage hits CES, social media mocks electronics show

"In our ongoing and relentless pursuit to own and define the modern pizza experience for our customers, we are focused on technology-based solutions that enable our team members and drivers to deliver even better customer experiences", said Artie Starrs, President, Pizza Hut, US.

A major power outage hit CES Wednesday, leaving parts of the world's largest consumer electronics show in darkness.

The week of tech love kicked off on Sunday evening with the opening of the CES Unveiled event - the place where smaller companies and startups get a chance to show their products before the giants like Samsung, LG, Google and Sony steal the show. Playing both sides, Panasonic also showed how it is bringing Google Assistant technology to cars as well.

The Consumer Technology Association, which runs CES, has issued a statement regarding the blackout saying that a preliminary assessment indicates that "condensation from heavy rainfall caused a flashover on one of the facility's transformers". Microsoft pulled out of having a booth at CES several years ago.

Home-entertainment equipment is expected to be among the technologies overhauled at CES this year, with LG promising to unveil the largest OLED television to feature an 8K resolution - more than double the sharpness of top televisions now on sale. We didn't have smart cities.

"The successful development of the world's first 8K OLED display is a milestone for the 8K era and underscores the exciting potential of OLED", LG Display chief technology officer In-Byung Kang said.

The rare blackout follows rains that had shuttered some events at the show, whose location in the Nevada desert usually offers visitors a respite from snow and frigid temperatures elsewhere in the country.

Not all technology at the show immediately came back to life, however. That product will be just one of a host of smart home devices launched, with everything from connected cat doors that open automatically to cordless, infra-red hair dryers revealed at CES.
