The Shining sequel Doctor Sleep lands director Mike Flanagan

The Shining Mike Flanagan

Warner Bros. has tapped Flanagan to direct The Shining sequel Doctor Sleep, The Hollywood Reporter has confirmed. And we were already seeing quite a few, as 2017 also saw the release of The Dark Tower (bad!), 1922 (good!), and Gerald's Game (very, very good!).

There's no timeline yet on the film adaptation (or casting news for what is sure to be a sought-after starring role), but given the fact that both Flanagan and Stephen King adaptations are white-hot right now, it's probably safe to say we won't have to wait too long for an update.

The novel begins as Torrance carries the trauma of the Overlook Hotel into adulthood. In "Doctor Sleep", Danny is now in his 40s and suffering the same problems of alcoholism and anger that plagued his father in the original story.

Flanagan's first order of business will be to rewrite the script that was originally adapted by Akiva Goldsman. During this time, he develops a connection with a young girl, Abra Stone, who comes to possess the same Shining abilities as he does. Flanagan's producing partner Trevor Macy will produce along with Vertigo Entertainment's Jon Berg, and Goldsman is executive producer. The scary group has discovered that their powers are enhanced when inhaling the "steam" that emanates from those with the shining power, especially when they suffer painful deaths. And Flanagan is widely seen as one of horror's rising stars, with films such as Absentia, Oculus, Ouija: Origin of Evil, Hush and Before I Wake packed into his resume over just the past seven years.
