Thirteen people killed in Montecito mudslides

Mudslides unleashed by a ferocious storm demolished homes in southern California, authorities said Tuesday.

Flash flooding and unsafe mudslides have swiftly become dangers, and residents are once again being forced to evacuate from their communities.

More than 50 people were rescued from rooftops because trees and power lines were blocking roads, including a mud-caked teenage girl who was pulled from the rubble of a collapsed home in Montecito after being trapped for hours.

A deluge of rain in Southern California triggered mudslides, flooding, and rivers of mud that have killed at least eight and forced thousands to evacuate, according to the Los Angeles Times.

Heavy downpours in communities along the USA state's scenic coastline sent mud, boulders and tons of debris rolling down hills - destroying dozens of homes, demolishing cars and toppling trees.

"Praying for the survivors and preparing for whatever may come". The courtyard of the 90-year-old Montecito Inn, built by silent movie actor Charlie Chaplin, was filled with a thick crust of debris driven by the slides.

"The house in back is gone", she could be heard saying as she inspected the damage.

"There are no customers", said Pierre Henry, owner of the Bree'osh Bakery Cafe Montecito, several blocks from the spot where a large mudslide crossed Coast Village Road as it moved toward the ocean. This is the 101 freeway in my neighborhood right now.

Evacuation orders that had been in place in the Kagel Canyon, Lopez Canyon and Little Tujunga Canyon areas near the recent Creek Fire burn area were lifted at 10 a.m.

The road is closed from Milpas Street in Santa Barbara at the north end to the junction with State Route 126 in Ventura.
