Herbal drug kratom linked to salmonella illnesses CDC says

Public health investigators interviewed the patients, and discovered that several had recently taken kratom in pill, tea, or powder form.

Kratom is touted as an opioid alternative that can ease pain and elevate your mood, but in this case, officials say it's made dozens of people very sick. The substance is often consumed for stimulant or pain-relieving effects, and it was briefly targeted by the DEA, resulting in a temporary hiatus in the United States market. However, the lag time between symptom onset and confirmed reports reaching the CDC is usually about three to four weeks.

CDC officials are now investigating an outbreak of Salmonella I 4, [5], 12:b:- infections that have sprung up in 20 states.

On February 6, the FDA classified kratom, a botanical substance widely used as a painkiller, despite agency approval, as an opioid.

When the FDA began investigating the increase in contamination to imported spice in 2013, the agency warned that "general filth" could allow the bacteria to get into these products.

The substance has also been blamed for the deaths of at least 36 people, according to warnings issued the Food and Drug Administration in November.

No normal brands or providers have been revealed by the examination, which is being led by the CDC alongside a few state wellbeing authorities and the US Food and Drug Administration.

The leaves of the Kratom plant are known for their opiate-like effects.

"Cases of mixing kratom, other opioids and other types of medication is extremely troubling because the activity of kratom at opioid receptors indicates there may be similar risks of combining kratom with certain drugs, just as there are with FDA-approved opioids", Gottlieb said.

"At this time, CDC recommends that people not consume kratom in any form".

The Drug Enforcement Administration is looking at a strong restriction on the sales of kratom, which is now traded freely on the internet and in some stores.
