Google shipped 3.9 million Pixel phones last year, IDC says

Google announced its second-generation Pixel 2 and Pixel 2 XL smartphones on October 4, 2017.

You can't argue with the fact that Google's Pixel 2 phones have the world's best smartphone camera, even better than the iPhone X.

The company reportedly only shipped 3.9 million Pixel phones in 2017, according to IDC research director Francisco Jeronimo. This would mean that Apple shipped more iPhones per week than the number of Google Pixel and Pixel 2 smartphones for the whole of 2017. If you recall, the IDC staffer recently revealed that Andy Rubin's start-up, Essential, shipped fewer than 90,000 phones in its first six months after launch.

Apple sold 77.3 million iPhones in the Christmas quarter for an average of 849.450 iPhones a day, per ZDNet's math.

The third reason is that Google doesn't have a strong retail presence. Apple also has deals with all the major carriers in the USA, putting iPhones in even more retail locations with even more salespeople. Google seems to have improved its supply line issues with the Pixel 2, which has consistently been in stock.

The Google Pixel phones have been very well received since they first appeared in 2016. For Google, that's not too shabby for a newcomer - it's twice the number of Pixels from the year before - but overall it's still pretty weak, and a sign that there's a long road ahead before the company even comes close to challenging Apple and Samsung.

But the Pixel isn't a massive commercial success for Google for the time being. Carrier deals make a huge difference in a country where nearly all phones are sold via carriers.

In comparison, the Galaxy S8 and S8 Plus sold 20 million devices in around four months past year. For the full year 2017, HMD Global produced 11.5 million units. Jeronimo said Google doubled its Pixel sales in the past year. HMD is now the world's sixth largest smartphone vendor.
