Two students injured in shooting at US middle school

The girl, whose name was not released, was booked at a juvenile detention facility on a charge of negligent discharge of a firearm, said officer Tony Im of the Los Angeles Police Department.

A 15-year-old girl was shot in the wrist while two other children and a staff member were hit by broken glass. A 12-year-old female student was taken into police custody. LAPD officials said it appears the girl did not plan to shoot when she brought the gun into school.

A 15-year-old boy was shot in the head and a 15-year-old girl was shot in the wrist in the incident.

The boy who was shot in the head was in stable condition at LAC-USC Medical Center following the incident and is expected to make a full recovery.

The Salvador Castro campus, which is situated next to a high school, has now been declared safe by authorities.

After police began to patrol the premises and investigate the evidence, they have come to a conclusion that the shooting was largely unintentional, and was not meant to cause harm to any classmates or faculty. The shooting happened at Sal Castro Middle School and was reported to police at about 8:55 a.m., according to the network.

According to at least one student in the classroom at the time of the shooting, another student was "accidentally playing" around with what they thought was a "fake gun".

Three other victims, including a woman, were initially described as having suffered abrasions. Westlake, a mostly Hispanic area, is home to more than 20 schools.

"I'm kind of afraid for my safety", 11-year-old Oswaldo Gonzalez, who attends the school, told The Los Angeles Times.

It remains unclear how or why the girl brought the gun to the school.

It is also one of at least three shooting incidents at USA schools in recent weeks.

"This continues to be an active investigation", according to an LAPD statement.
