Louisville vacates 2013 national championship as part of NCAA sanctions

Louisville has lost its appeal of NCAA sanctions related to a basketball infractions case, meaning the Cardinals must vacate their 2013 national championship and a pair of Final Four appearances.

Louisville will have to vacate its 2013 NCAA title and pay a fine.

I can not say this strongly enough: We believe the NCAA is simply wrong. Louisville interim president Greg Postel said in a statement Tuesday that the school still disagrees with the NCAA's ruling.

"It is important to note that a precedent for such a case does not exist, and the NCAA infractions committee has wide discretion as it determines penalties".

Former Louisville head coach Rick Pitino was hit with a Level 1 violation, the dreaded "failure to monitor".

Pitino has plenty of connections to the New England and MA area, as he played at UMass and coached Boston University, Providence College and the Boston Celtics before arriving at Louisville. The Cardinals will have to vacate 123 victories including the championship, and return some $600,000 in conference revenue from the 2012-15 NCAA Tournaments.

Louisville must vacate men's basketball records in which student-athletes competed while ineligible during the 2011-12 through 2014-15 academic years according to a decision issued by the NCAA Division I Infractions Appeals Committee.

The Committee on Infractions responded to the appeal by stating the penalties were appropriate due to the serious, intentional and numerous violations orchestrated by a university staff member for almost four years.

Higuain, of course! - Allegri backs his man over Spurs' Kane

The NCAA ruled in October 2016 that the school found four violations in their year-long investigation of the program.

Postel asserted, as he said the school did in its appeal, that the program had apologized, cooperated and imposed penalties on itself - actions that "should have been a factor in the severity of the punishment", he said.

Louisville is now the first D1 basketball program to have a National Championship vacated. McGee was given a 10-year show-cause penalty, while former graduate assistant Brandon Williams was given a one-year show cause penalty.

Interim head coach David Padgett said he talked to his team about the announcement and texted several former players from that title squad, reminding them of their achievement.

The FBI said telephone records show Gatto spoke directly with an unnamed Louisville coach multiple times in the days before Bowen committed to play for the Cardinals.

"Coach Pitino will make a statement tomorrow".

"The university under prior leadership never made excuses for what took place", he said.
