NRA Chief Wayne LaPierre: FBI, Elitism To Blame For School Shootings

On Tuesday, Trump signed a memorandum recommending that Attorney General Jeff Sessions propose rules banning so-called bump stocks, which can effectively turn semi-automatic weapons into machine guns.

While Trump's support gives Republicans in Congress more cover to pass narrow gun control measures, it is unclear what action lawmakers will take following the latest in a string of mass shootings, including last week's rampage at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida.

In Florida, meanwhile, funerals continued.

"We must immediately harden our schools".

He offered the NRA's School Shield programs assistance "absolutely free to any school in America". He called that "a very negative thing" and said he wouldn't want his own son participating.

Mr Trump was meeting with politicians overnight (AEDT) "to discuss school safety", and with governors next week.

He has called for an age limit of 21 to buy guns, as well as tougher background checks.

The NRA is a key sponsor of the conference, and until now largely quiet about the Parkland, Fl., high school shooting.

'We were all horrified by another bad tragedy at an American school, ' LaPierre began.

Auburn's Anfernee McLemore Stretchered Off Court After Horrific Ankle Injury
Auburn trailed by as many as 26 points in the first half, but was able to storm back in the second half, even without McLemore. Mustapha Heron led Auburn with 16 points, but was just 3-of-12 from the floor as the Tigers shot 31.1 percent for the game.

"The whole idea from some of our opponents that armed security makes us less safe is completely ridiculous", LaPierre said.

"Many in legacy media love mass shootings", NRA spokesperson Dana Loesh thundered to the crowd. "I do have a problem with them and I'm not watching my language because it's about time that somebody call you out for what you are. Crying white mothers are ratings gold to you and numerous legacy media in the back", she charged, pointing to journalists at the back of the ballroom. "Their goal is to eliminate the Second Amendment, and our firearms freedoms". "This is a war on women", she insisted, "because the AR-15 is the most popular rifle with women".

LaPierre made his big debut on the stage at CPAC Thursday morning, a little after Trump's tweet, and slammed the media for its coverage of the tragedy. "What they want are more restrictions on the law-abiding", LaPierre said.

"We're going to make changes", Bondi said.

LaPierre also accused Democrats and other gun-control advocates of exploiting the mass school shooting in Florida to promote an anti-gun agenda.

In the end, Trump did not stray too far from conservative Republican orthodoxy.

Ms Bondi said Florida would bring in a system of gun violence restraining orders so law enforcement officers can take away guns of people in custody for mental health reasons.

"What we're looking for is solutions that don't ban a class of firearms for all individuals but ban all weapons for certain individuals who are identified as threats to public safety", White House spokesman Raj Shah said. In a statement Wednesday, NEA president Lily Eskelsen GarcĂa said, "Educators need to be focused on teaching our students".

Pence said people are "too often unable or unwilling to meet our fellow citizens where they are, do what the president did yesterday, just ... listen with one another in a spirit of humility and respect". The address Thursday, though, left no doubt about where the group stands as a renewed gun control conversation takes shape in Washington and state capitals across the country in response.
