Another Clinton, Mo officer shot to death while on duty

Police are on the scene of a shooting that left at least two officers injured

Local police have named the victim as 30-year-old Christopher Ryan Morton.

For the second time in less than a year, a police officer has been killed in the line of duty in Clinton, Missouri.

The shooter was identified Wednesday as James E. Waters, 37, of Clinton, the state patrol tweeted.

The gunman fired at officers from inside the house. Two other officers are in stable condition and undergoing treatment for gunshot wounds - one in the arm and the other in the shoulder, he said.

According to Missouri State Highway patrol, officers were responding to a call at a residence when the shooting took place.

The suspect then barricaded himself inside. The patrol says a SWAT team entered the home at 12:10 a.m. Wednesday but found the suspect dead.

Clinton is about 70 miles (110 kilometers) east of Kansas City.

"The Clinton Police Department is a well respected police department", said Sgt. Lowe. They'll need help along the way.

When police arrived, a man began shooting at them from inside a home.

In a phone interview with Scripps station KSHB in Kansas City just after 11 p.m. Tuesday night, Toliver said she could hear gun shots around 10:50 p.m. Tuesday.

"Certainly when Officer Michael was killed on August 6 of past year it was just devastating to our community, and these things as we've said then and I'll say it again, they just don't happen in small towns like ours".

The two women who called 911 were not injured, Sgt. Lowe said. And these are good and right things, and we should do them.

At some point in time in that interaction they [police officers] were shot at by the suspect from inside the residence.
